AP Warns Hotel Booking Users of Phishing Scams

By Netvora Tech News

The Authority for Personal Data (AP) has sent a warning to users of hotel booking platforms about phishing scams. The privacy watchdog has received reports of phishing attacks related to booking platforms for hotels and other accommodations over the past period. "Phishing attacks can have severe consequences for victims, including identity theft or financial loss," the AP stated. While the AP has not named specific platforms, earlier this year, the Fraud Helpdesk reported that it received more reports of fraud via Booking.com than the previous year. In March, hotels were also warned by Microsoft about phishing attacks that appear to originate from Booking.com. Hotels and accommodations use booking platforms to communicate with guests and process reservations. Attackers are trying to steal login credentials from hotels, which would allow them to log in to these booking platforms. They then send messages to guests directing them to phishing sites. In some cases, criminals ask guests to verify their credit card information or make a new payment. Since the messages are sent via compromised accounts on the booking platform, they appear to be from the relevant hotel. The AP advises users of these platforms to contact the accommodation directly by phone if they are unsure about a message.
