Cabinet Explores Imposing Sanctions on Laundry Bear Members

By Netvora Tech News

The demissionary cabinet is investigating the feasibility of imposing sanctions on members of the Laundry Bear group, which, according to intelligence services, was behind the attack on the police last year. The attack, which occurred when a police officer infected with infostealer malware, resulted in the theft of data from 62,000 employees. The Committee on Foreign Affairs had asked Minister Veldkamp of Foreign Affairs how the Netherlands would respond to the attack. "By publicly revealing this cyber operation, we show Russia that we will not let such incidents pass unnoticed," Veldkamp responded. "Netherlands shows that it knows what's going on and through transparency, we reduce the chance of further damage being done by the actor." According to the minister, the Netherlands' primary focus is on enhancing resilience, supporting partner countries, and setting up international coalitions to counter the cyber threat. "Furthermore, concrete consequences can be linked to cyber aggression, such as European sanctions," Veldkamp continued. "Last year, on Dutch initiative, a number of Russian cybercriminals were placed on the sanctions list. The cabinet is investigating the possibility of imposing sanctions in this specific case."

Sanctions as a Deterrent

In addition to increasing resilience and international cooperation, the cabinet is exploring the possibility of imposing sanctions on the perpetrators of the attack. This move is seen as a deterrent to potential cyber attackers, demonstrating that the Netherlands will not tolerate such incidents.

A Multifaceted Approach

The cabinet's approach to addressing the cyber threat is multifaceted, involving not only sanctions but also increased cooperation with international partners and the development of new technologies to enhance cybersecurity.

  • Enhancing resilience: Strengthening cybersecurity measures to prevent and respond to cyber attacks.
  • SUPPORTING PARTNER COUNTRIES: Collaborating with other countries to share intelligence and best practices in cybersecurity.
  • INTERNATIONAL COALITIONS: Establishing international coalitions to counter the cyber threat and promote cybersecurity globally.
  • SANCTIONS: Imposing sanctions on individuals and organizations involved in cyber aggression.
