Cybersecurity Alert: UK Government Urges Business Leaders to Heed Expert Advice
By Netvora Tech News
The UK government has issued a stern warning to business leaders to take seriously the growing threat of cyberattacks, following a string of attacks on major retailers and other companies. According to Richard Horne, head of the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), these attacks have serious consequences, disrupting essential services, causing significant costs for businesses, and often compromising personal customer data.
Cyberattacks have very real consequences, causing disruption to services we all depend on, incurring large costs for businesses, and often compromising personal data of customers. This is unacceptable," Horne emphasized.
The NCSC, responsible for protecting the UK's cyber interests, offers free security advice on its website, but Horne lamented that not all businesses take advantage of these resources. "There is a growing gap between the increasing cyber risks facing the UK and our collective capacity to defend against them," he said.
To mitigate these risks, Horne urged businesses to operate in a way that minimizes the potential impact of an incident and ensures they know how to respond effectively. "That's effective risk management, and every director who thinks they're exempt from serious cyber risks should think again," he advised.
The past weeks have seen several well-known British chains fall victim to cyberattacks, including retailers Marks & Spencer and Harrods, supermarket chain Co-op, and Peter Green Chilled, a supplier to British supermarkets. According to Horne, these incidents should serve as a wake-up call.
