Payment processor Adyen was hit by multiple DDoS attacks on Monday night. The attacks caused disruptions to payment processing, temporarily preventing some customers from making transactions.
This is how the attack unfolded
According to Adyen, there were three separate DDoS attacks in a short period of time. These attacks flood a server with traffic, causing systems to slow down or fail altogether. The goal: to disrupt service provision, possibly as a means of extortion or to damage reputation.
Customer Impact
Multiple customers reported outages at checkout, both online and in physical stores. Adyen later confirmed that the cause was “unusually high traffic volumes” to their systems. The attack was complex and targeted their infrastructure, the company said.
Recovery and prevention
The attacks were contained within hours, according to Adyen. The company says it has taken additional security measures to prevent recurrence. There is no evidence that any data was compromised.
Advice to businesses
Organizations using Adyen or similar payment services are advised to keep fallback options available and to have their own monitoring in order. DDoS attacks are becoming more sophisticated and are increasingly targeting essential services.
