Firefox Code Migrates to Microsoft's GitHub

By Netvora Tech News

Mozilla has decided to relocate the Firefox codebase from its own Mercurial version control system (VCS) to Microsoft's GitHub. A Mozilla employee confirmed on Hacker News that the Firefox code has been migrated from hg.mozilla.org to GitHub. "Once the migration is complete, Mozilla will no longer spend time hosting its own VCS infrastructure, which has proven to be a significant challenge for scalability, performance, and availability, essential for such a large project," the employee stated. The Mozilla employee emphasized that if the VCS infrastructure goes down, no work can be done on the browser. This presents challenges when hosting a VCS system independently. "Firefox is also an attractive target, and an attacker who gains access to the VCS server would be a problem," the employee noted. The migration only applies to the Firefox codebase. Bugzilla, Mozilla's platform for reporting and tracking Firefox bugs, as well as other code-related systems, will continue to be used as usual. The Mozilla employee does not think Firefox will fully migrate to GitHub. "It's just too challenging given the history and requirements," they said. GitHub is a popular platform for software developers, acquired by Microsoft in 2018 for $7.5 billion.
