Government Seeks Clarity on Dutch Cloud Alternative for SIDN

By Netvora Tech News

The Dutch government is working to provide clarity on a potential Dutch cloud alternative for Amazon, allowing the Stichting Internet Domeinregistratie Nederland (SIDN) to use it for its domain registration system. This was announced by Minister Veldkamp of Foreign Affairs. SIDN, the organization responsible for managing the .nl domain names, plans to move a part of its domain registration system to Amazon. The planned move sparked controversy, leading the government to announce various investigations, including a risk analysis by the AIVD. The government initially stated that SIDN could proceed with the move to Amazon if it implemented the measures recommended by the AIVD. In March, the Second Chamber of Parliament unanimously adopted a motion urging the government to engage in talks with SIDN and national cloud providers to bring back the part of the DNS chain that will be moved to Amazon to the Netherlands. "The government would have preferred it if SIDN could have immediately used a Dutch or European solution, so that the entire DNS chain could remain in the Netherlands," Minister Veldkamp said in response to questions from GreenLeft-PvdA. "However, to our knowledge, there is currently no suitable Dutch cloud provider for this part of the domain registration system." The minister also referred to the earlier adopted motion. "Based on the adopted motion, SIDN and the government will explore whether there is a suitable Dutch cloud provider for this part of the domain registration system to bring back the limited part of the DNS chain that will be moved to AWS to the Netherlands. You will be informed of the outcome by the summer, which should be within the next few weeks."
