Microsoft has released a test version of Windows 11 featuring quantum-resistant encryption. According to the tech giant, the test version is designed to help customers explore and test the use of quantum-resistant encryption within their operational environments. The focus is on compatibility, performance, and integration of these new algorithms within existing security infrastructure. The algorithms Microsoft is set to add include ML-KEM and ML-DSA, which were chosen as encryption standards by the American National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) last year. ML-KEM was previously known as CRYSTALS-Kyber. "Developers can now experiment with ML-KEM in scenarios where public key encapsulation or key exchange is desired, preparing for the 'harvest now, decrypt later' threat," says Microsoft's Aabha Thipsay. Thipsay adds that TLS 1.3 is a requirement for quantum-resistant encryption. "We strongly recommend that customers switch from other TLS protocols if they haven't already done so." The algorithms can be tested in Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27863. For now, only three variants of ML-DSA are available.
