US Senators Call for Immediate Ban on TP-Link Router Sales

By Netvora Tech News

A group of 17 US senators and congressional members have written a letter to the US Secretary of Commerce, urging an immediate ban on the sale of TP-Link routers in the United States. The lawmakers claim that TP-Link, a Chinese-based company, has close ties with the Chinese government and poses a "clear and present danger" to American networks.

The senators and congressional members allege that TP-Link's low prices are driving out American alternatives and creating an opportunity for foreign surveillance and sabotage in US networks. They also claim that Chinese state actors have exploited vulnerabilities in TP-Link routers to launch cyberattacks in the US.

Chinese National Security Law Raises Concerns

The lawmakers point out that TP-Link is subject to China's National Security Law, which gives the Chinese government access to American systems before US authorities are even aware of vulnerabilities. Moreover, TP-Link is the only router manufacturer that refuses to participate in industry efforts to clean up botnets sponsored by the Chinese government.

The letter urges the US government to ban the sale of TP-Link network equipment in the US immediately. "Every day we do nothing, China wins while American competitors suffer, and American security remains at risk," the letter states.

Earlier Calls for Ban

This is not the first time US government officials have called for a ban on TP-Link routers. Earlier this year, US officials also urged a ban on the sale and use of TP-Link routers in the US.
